Its fret board is smooth and steel plated. It is played with a plectrum made of dry coconut shell. It has got several sympathetic resonant string underneath a layer of a few main playing strings.

Sitar: This is the most popular of all north Indian string instruments. It has a long neck with frets and a gourd at the bottom. Some Sitars come with another gourd at the top to enhance the resonance. It has some main playing strings running from top to the bottom over the frets and quite a few sympathetic strings underneath the frets. It is played with a plectrum made of wire. There are two distinctly different styles of Sitars. The size, number of strings and such other details vary between the two. The price differs based on size, quality of the guard, wood and other materials, decoration and above all sound.

Tanpura: It is a long necked instrument with 4-6 strings running from the top to the bottom made of gourd. It is used as the background drone to Indian classical music. Gents Tanpura are full size (approximately four and half feet long) meant for C to D pitches. With change of strings they can be tuned higher. Ladies Tanpura, on the other hand, are meant for G to B pitches and are a little smaller (approximately 4 feet long). There are smaller Tanpuras meant for accompaniment with instrumental music meant for C to D pitches and can also be tuned higher with change of strings. Price of the instrument depends on the size, quality of gourd, wood, decoration and maker.

Tabla: It is a two-piece drum, a combination of base (Bayan) and treble drums (Dahina). Base drum is made of metal such as copper, broze, steel etc and the treble drum is made of wood. Both are hollow in side covered with goat hide in three layers put in tension by means of straps running from top to the bottom of the drum. The cover has a central back circle meant for resonance. The Drums are placed on cushioned rings. They are tuned with a hammer. Covers are for protection of the drums.
